The Mahabodhi Society of India is the oldest Buddhist Society at Bodhgaya. It was founded by Devamitta Anagarika Dharmapala in 1891 when he was on a pilgrimage to India.

A hundred year old building and the oldest among the existing monasteries, stands at the west of the Mahabodhi Mahavihara. For the Construction of Buddhagaya Centre, Dharmapala took much more pains than he did for any other centre. Though he had to face a lot of obstacles in the way he succeeded in his mission.
